NARDJES A.

FILMFORUM IM MUSEUM LUDWIG   Ticketshop

Algiers, 8 March 2019. NARDJES A., a young activist, takes part in a demonstration for International Women’s Day full of hope for a different Algeria. The demonstration is part of the ‘Hirak’ protest movement, which began in February 2019 when the elderly president Abdelaziz Bouteflika expressed his intentions to run for a fifth term in office, then reached revolutionary proportions. Director Karim Aïnouz shot the film on a smartphone over the course of one day in the life of his protagonist Nardjes. He observes her from the preparations for the demonstration to her immersion in the crowd, and the point when the tensions and emotions reach their climax. The filmmaker shows a movement that is predominantly driven by men and young people, and which is a reflection of Algerian society. Shaped by their country’s history, the younger generation is determined to take their fate into their own hands.
