South Sudan is one of the youngest states on the world map and has known almost only a state of war since its independence. After Akuol de Mabior was forced into exile in 2005, she returns to her country equipped with a camera to accompany her mother Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, also called the "Mother of South Sudan". Following in her husband's footsteps, she is on the verge of becoming the country's vice president herself. In her documentary NO SIMPLE WAY HOME, the director traces the political history of the country through her family history. Hovering over this is the question of her identity and her role as a South Sudanese woman.
