Johanna receives an unexpected visit from her grandfather Kito from Tanzania – for the first time. During a visit to a museum together, Kito discovers a mask that he believes was taken from his home village during the colonial era. Shortly afterwards, the city is shaken by a mysterious theft: the valuable Makonde mask has disappeared from the Ethnological Museum. Kito falls under suspicion. Together with her athletic friend Sweta and the tech-savvy Anton, Johanna begins investigating on her own. The three uncover unexpected connections between past and present and embark on a turbulent journey that goes far beyond solving the mysterious case.

Following the screening of DAS GEHEIMNIS DER GESTOHLENEN MASKE, the film's director will join us for a Q&A session at the cinema. Afterwards, we invite children and families to an open, child-friendly workshop at the deepower office. Together, we will explore the film's central themes, including friendship, courage, looted cultural heritage, museums, and the question of how we can stand up for justice. We will take a closer look at the story's heroine while also reflecting on our own family heritage and questions of identity and belonging.

Nancy Mac Granaky-Quaye has been working as a director and writer since completing her directing studies at ifs Cologne, and served as a curator for the Africa Film Festival Cologne.
In 2021, she co-created the ZDF program TERRA XPRESS “SCHWARZ IN DEUTSCHLAND.” From 2021 to 2022, Nancy Mac Granaky-Quaye wrote program concepts and scripts for the youth show VERSTEHEN SIE SPASS, KIDS! Her debut feature film HOMESHOPPERS’ PARADISE premiered at the 57th International Hof Film Festival and screened at the 44th Max Ophüls Prize in Saarbrücken. In 2024, she directed the first episodes of the fourth season of “WIR,” and in 2025, the first three episodes of the second season of the series “ECHT Friends,” which was nominated for the TeleVisionale 2025 Children’s Series Award and has been airing since May 2025. Her current project is the feature film DAS GEHEIMNIS DER GESTOHLENEN MASKE (THE SECRET OF THE STOLEN MASK).
deepower e. V. is a Cologne-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowerment, anti-racist education, and cultural participation. The organization works with children, adolescents, young adults, and educational professionals in schools, youth centers, and community spaces. Through its projects, deepower combines political education, arts, culture, and media work with issues of identity, belonging, discrimination, and social responsibility. Its goal is to create spaces where young people can make their perspectives visible, strengthen their voices, and engage critically with history, the present, and the future.
