On the island of Fogo, Nana grows up with her father's family. Her mother, Nia, leaves the archipelago shortly after her birth to seek treatment for a mysterious illness — and never returns. One day, Nana falls seriously ill and is sent to the foot of the volcano to be cared for. There, she discovers a world between dream and reality. HANAMI, a Japanese term for the celebration of cherry blossoms in spring, follows Nana's journey from birth to age 17, carrying a heavy burden. In this debut feature film, Denise Fernandes offers a poetic reflection on the Cape Verdean condition, torn between here and elsewhere, the pains of exile and island isolation.
