Julius Eastman (1940-1980) was an African American composer, musician, performer, and activist. Originally trained as a classical pianist, he joined New York’s experimental music scene in the late 1970s. As a Black and queer artist, his works with provocative titles such as Evil N**** and Gay Guerrilla were not merely musical explorations, but also embodied his radical activism and political convictions. JOY BOY: A TRIBUTE TO JULIUS EASTMAN unfolds in four chapters dedicated to four of his compositions, bringing six filmmakers into dialogue to pay tribute to his legacy.

Paul Shemisi is a photographer, documentary filmmaker and hip-hop poet. His work, whether as a poet or as a cameraman, shows “his” Kinshasa: an artistically flourishing cosmopolitan city with an incomparable wealth of invention – the daily weapon of resistance and the engine for the resilience of the population. He will offer hip-hop workshops in French at schools in Cologne and other creative workshops together with Nizar Saleh.
Since 2016, Paul and Nizar have formed the COLLECTIF FAIRE-PART collective together with other Belgian filmmakers. Their common theme is primarily the reappraisal of colonialism. Paul is co-founder of the production company “Kimpavita Film”.
