44 JOURS

On 20 January 2009, the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe experienced an unprecedented social movement. For 44 days, the island was paralysed by a general strike. Director Martine Delumeau has long observed Guadeloupe, her parents' native island, from afar. From mainland France, she followed the strike and the images filmed by Guadeloupeans. Using archive footage, 44 JOURS looks back at this unique and powerful mobilisation and the massive support for the Guadeloupean LKP collective (Liyannaj Kont Pwofitasyon / Stand up against exploitation). Drawing on her personal story, the filmmaker also looks at her journey from being of Guadeloupean origin to feeling a sense of belonging to her origins.
