MÁRIO

Filmforum Ludwig   Ticketshop

MÁRIO tells the story of Mário de Andrade (1928 - 1990), a pan-African intellectual, activist, diplomat and poet who spent his entire life fighting for African nation-building in the firm belief that independence from colonialism is the beginning and not the end of the struggle. Raised in Angola, one of the last European colonies in Africa, Mário left his homeland to fight tirelessly in exile for African sovereignty. Together with companions from other Portuguese-occupied territories – Cape Verde, Mozambique, São Tomé and Guinea-Bissau – MÁRIO coordinates the bases of the liberation movements in the Portuguese colonies.

Billy Woodberry

Billy Woodberry is one of the founders of the L.A. Rebellion Film Movement. The movement consisted of a generation of young African and African-American filmmakers who studied at the UCLA Film School from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. These independent filmmakers created a Black Cinema that strived for a new aesthetic and mode of representation and addressed the realities of Black existence. Woodberry's film BLESS THEIR LITTLE HEARTS (1984) is considered an essential work of this cinema. His work has been shown in Cannes, Berlin and various museums. He is a member of the faculty of the School of Film/Video and the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts.
