KADIB ABYAD (THE MOTHER OF ALL LIES)

At the age of 12, Asmae El Moudir realised that she had no images of herself as a child. Based on this absence and a web of family lies, the director stages her own story using figurines and a model of her house and their working-class neighbourhood in Casablanca. Through a dialogue between her grandmother, her parents and her neighbours, memories are revived and words are set free. KADIB ABYAD explores a dark page in Moroccan history, the bloody repression of the "bread riots" in 1981 under the authoritarian regime of Hassan II. Asmae El Moudir lifts the veil on history and links it to contemporary Moroccan society.
