At the end of the 19th century, Germany forcibly annexed territories outside of Europe. As a result, people from the colonized African regions migrated to Germany. During the Nazi “racial policies,” many Black people were forcibly sterilized or murdered in concentration camps and hospitals. After 1945, the survivors were once again marginalized. It was not until the Black Women’s Movement of the 1980s that this history began to be addressed— which are the key stages in the Diek family’s history, beginning with Mandenga Diek’s (Dika Akwa) emigration from Cameroon to Germany in 1891.
Memory Activist and descendant Abenaa Adomako will guide visitors through the exhibition.
