FÜHRUNG im Nippeser Norden - Straßennamen spiegeln Geschichte wider
kein Ort Ticketshop
The German colonial era is still present today. Although it is over, its legacy continues to have an impact today, as can be seen in street names and other places that still honor colonial criminals without reflection.
The Afrika-Viertel in Nippes is a colonial memorial space whose name is linked to the strong colonial revisionist movement in Cologne in the early 1930s, which was committed to reclaiming the colonial territories lost in the First World War. Under National Socialism, numerous colonial propaganda events were held to defend Germany against the accusation by the Allied victorious powers that Germany had failed in its colonies and spoke of colonial guilt lie in this context. In this climate, a colonial exhibition was held in 1934. At the same time, the naming of streets after colonial actors or former “protectorates” kept alive the memory of the former supposed greatness.
