Four Sudanese directors, four friends. Eltayeb Mahdi, Manar Al Hilo, Ibrahim Shadad and Suleiman Mohamed Ibrahim founded the Sudanese Film Group in 1989. After 30 years of exile, censorship and the closure of cinemas as a result of the dictatorial regime, they wanted to realise a common dream: to revive a disused open-air cinema. The project soon becomes a trip down memory lane, as the four friends read each other old letters, look through documents and photos, and watch old film clips, all the time dreaming of a Sudan where art and thoughts are free. But in order to restore the old cinema, they have enormous difficulties to overcome in the crisis-ridden country.
Gasmelbari takes us on a trip through Sudanese cinematic history and his nonconformist protagonists appear as early warning signs for the current political upheaval in the country.
